Bach – Prelude & Fugue No. 1 in C major BWV 846 | WTC Book I

From the New Art Gallery, Walsall, 2000 The Well-Tempered Clavier Book I Andrei Gavrilov - piano Johann Sebastian Bach - Prelude & Fugue No. 1 in C major, BWV 846 Watch other Bach´s Preludes and Fugues of The Well-Tempered Clavier: https://goo.gl/LwM6i4 Subscribe to EuroArts: https://goo.gl/jrui3M The title of Bach's Well-Tempered Clavier refers to the new system of tuning keyboard instruments that had been developed by, amongst others, the Halberstadt organist Andreas Werckmeister (1645-1706), to make it possible to play in all 24 major and minor keys, something which hitherto had been impossible with "mean-tone" tuning. There were, however, several such "well-tempered" tuning in use at that time, and, contrary to earlier assumptions, there is simply no evidence that Bach wrote his two books of preludes and fugues for our modern "equal temperament", which is but one of several possible tunings. Whatever the case, for him the tempered tuning meant that he could use all major and minor keys to present a systematic, state-of-the-art compendium of the fugue form, which was then at the very peak of its development. Intended "both for the use and consumption of the eager-to-learn musical youth and as a special pastime for those already skilled in this discipline", Bach compiled the first part of his Well-Tempered Clavier in 1722; this was near the end of the period he spent in the service of Prince Leopold of Anhalt-Cöthen - an essentially happy time for Bach, but marred by the sudden death of his first wife in 1720. When the second part of The Well-Tempered Clavier was completed in 1744, comprising another 24 fugues together with introductory preludes, Bach had already been Thomaskantor in Leipzig for more than 20 years and the fugue was no longer in vogue. This documental review almost seems to have been an attempt on the great composer's part to halt the march of time. Born in Moscow, Andrei Gavrilov was just eighteen when he won the legendary Tchaikovsky Competition in 1974 and embarked on a meteoric career. By 1980, when the Soviet regime for a time imposed severe restrictions on his movements abroad, he had already appeared in almost every important musical center in the world. After returning to the concert platforms of the Western world in August 1984, he soon established himself as one of the foremost pianists of his generation. His recordings and his musical activities, in general, have brought him many awards.

Bach - Violin Partita No. 2 in D minor, BWV 1004 {Grumiaux}

Please support my channel on https://Ko-fi.com/bartjebartmans Johann Sebastian Bach (31 March [O.S. 21 March] 1685 – 28 July 1750) was a German composer and musician of the late Baroque period. He is known for instrumental compositions such as the Cello Suites and Brandenburg Concertos; keyboard works such as the Goldberg Variations, The Well-Tempered Clavier and the Toccata and Fugue in D minor; and vocal music such as the St Matthew Passion and the Mass in B minor. Since the 19th-century Bach Revival, he has been generally regarded as one of the greatest composers in the history of Western music. Partita for solo violin No. 2 in D minor, BWV 1004 (1720) 1. Allemande (0:00) 2. Courante (3:12) 3. Sarabande (5:11) 4. Gigue (8:17) 5. Chaconne (11:25) Arthur Grumiaux, violin Description by Michael Jameson [-] Alongside Paganini's 24 Caprices for solo violin and Bach's six cello suites, his Partitas and Sonatas (three apiece) for solo violin stand out among their comparatively few siblings as magnificent music written for an unaccompanied stringed instrument. And while they also represent the zenith of polyphonic writing for a non-keyboard instrument, Bach's sonatas and partitas were also crucially important in the development of violin technique. With their colossal scope, huge technical demands, and musical complexity, and notwithstanding their awesome intellectual intensity, these creations greatly transcended anything that had preceded them, including the Partitas for solo violin by von Westhoff (1696), and various comparable solo works by Biber, Pisendel, and others. It seems most probable that either the Dresden virtuosi Pisendel or Volumier, or even more likely the Cöthen Konzertmeister Spiess, would have been the first players to attempt these exceptionally challenging works, all of which sound as if they were written for an age of instrumental virtuosity that still lay far in the future. The sonatas are restricted to four movements (slow-fast-slow-fast, as with the early sonata da chiesa), one of which is a fugue. The Partitas are generally more extended, and of unorthodox formal design (as perhaps is implied by their more wide-ranging generic title), and by the more exploratory, improvisatory feel of the music even as they consist of sequences of Baroque dances. The awesome and eloquent Partita No. 2 in D minor, BWV 1004, seems for the most part to follow the conventional outline of the Baroque suite, opening with an earnest and purposeful Allemanda unexpectedly free of chordal multiple-stopping. There follow a Corrente and a Sarabanda, whose brief coda furnishes the link with the succeeding Giga. However, this work concludes with the most labyrinthine and intellectually powerful single movement ever devised for an unaccompanied string instrument. This is Bach's famous Chaconne (originally "Ciaccona"), a colossal arched series of 64 stunning variants upon the stark, open-ended four-measure phrase heard at the beginning. Two monumental outer sections in the minor enclose a major-key central episode, and this great structure encompasses every aspect of violin-playing technique and contrapuntal ingenuity that would have been known in Bach's day. The Chaconne, whose duration exceeds 15 minutes (and is thus longer than the rest of the work put together) is often performed as a free-standing movement and has also been widely transcribed for other instruments. Bach - Violin Partita No. 2 in D minor BWV 1004 - Sato | Netherlands Bach Society

‘Sei solo’… you’re on your own? In the days before ‘AutoCorrect’, spelling was mainly a question of feeling, especially in another language. But what if Bach deliberately did not write ‘Sei soli’ above his six violin solos? What if he wanted to warn his soloist before sending them out on stage armed only with a bow, four strings and a few of his most difficult pieces in his head? Bach - Brandenburg Concerto No. 5 in D major BWV 1050 - Sato | Netherlands Bach Society

The Netherlands Bach Society performs the 'Brandenburg' Concerto in D major for All of Bach. Bach himself never went to Amsterdam, and Rembrandt never went to Leipzig or Berlin. However, there were many ties between the Republic of the Netherlands and Bach’s employers. Nowadays, both Rembrandt’s paintings and Bach’s music are regarded as icons of European art, and here they are presented as a unique combination for eye and ear. For this recording, we were guests at the Gallery of Honour at the Rijksmuseum, in Amsterdam. We were invited to come and perform Bach’s unusual ‘Brandenburg' Concerto no. 5 in order to celebrate the loan of an exceptional harpsichord to the museum. For the recording, the original instrument, built by Johannes Ruckers in 1640, was played by harpsichordist Richard Egarr. Bach - Orchestral Suite No. 2 in B minor, BWV 1067

The four orchestral suites (called ouvertures by their author), BWV 1066--1069 are four suites by Johann Sebastian Bach. The name ouverture refers only in part to the opening movement in the style of the French overture, in which a majestic opening section in relatively slow dotted-note rhythm in duple meter is followed by a fast fugal section, then rounded off with a short recapitulation in triple meter of the opening music. More broadly, the term was used in Baroque Germany for a suite of dance-pieces in French Baroque style preceded by such an ouverture. This genre was extremely popular in Germany during Bach's day, and he showed far less interest in it than was usual: Robin Stowell writes that "Telemann's 135 surviving examples [represent] only a fraction of those he is known to have written"; Christoph Graupner left 85; and Johann Friedrich Fasch left almost 100. Bach did write several other ouverture (suites) for solo instruments, notably the Cello Suite no. 5, BWV 1011, which also exists in the autograph Lute Suite in G minor, BWV 995, the Keyboard Partita no. 4 in D, BWV 828, and the Overture in the French style, BWV 831 for keyboard. The two keyboard works are among the few Bach published, and he prepared the lute suite for a "Monsieur Schouster," presumably for a fee, so all three may attest to the form's popularity. Scholars believe that Bach did not conceive of the four Orchestral Suites as a set (in the way he conceived of the Brandenburg Concertos), since the sources are various, as detailed below. The source is a partially autograph set of parts (Bach wrote out those for flute and viola) from Leipzig in 1738--39. Ouverture (Metrical sign of opening section is C; metrical sign of fugal section is 2 with a slash through it; metrical sign of ending section, marked Lentement, is 3/4) Rondeau - spelled Rondeaux by Bach (metrical sign is ₵) Sarabande (metrical sign is 3/4), with a canon at the 12th between the flute (plus first violins) and the bass Bourrée I/II (metrical sign is ₵) Polonaise/ Double (metrical sign for both is 3/4); the flute part is marked "Moderato e staccato" and the first violin part "lentement" (slowly) Menuet (metrical sign is 3/4) Badinerie (metrical sign is 2/4). Bach, in the autograph part, spells this "Battinerie". Instrumentation: Solo "[Flute] traversiere" (transverse flute), violin I/II, viola, basso continuo. The Badinerie (literally "jesting" in French; in other works Bach used the Italian word with the same meaning, "Scherzo") has become a show-piece for solo flautists because of its quick pace and difficulty. Joshua Rifkin has argued, based on in-depth analysis of the partially autograph primary sources, that this work is based on an earlier version in A minor in which the solo flute part was scored instead for solo violin.[3] Rifkin demonstrates that notational errors in the surviving parts can best be explained by their having been copied from a model a whole tone lower, and that this solo part would venture below the lowest pitches on the flutes Bach wrote for (the transverse flute, which Bach called flauto traverso or flute traversiere). Rifkin argues that the violin was the most likely option, noting that in writing the word "Traversiere" in the solo part, Bach seems to have fashioned the letter T out of an earlier "V", suggesting that he originally intended to write the word "violin" (the page in question can be viewed here, p. 6)[4] Further, Rifkin notes passages that would have used the violinistic technique of bariolage. Rifkin also suggests that Bach was inspired to write the suite by a similar work by his second cousin Johann Bernhard Bach. Flautist Steven Zohn accepts the argument of an earlier version in A minor, but suggests that the original part may have been playable on flute as well as violin. Oboist Gonzalo X. Ruiz has argued in detail that the solo instrument in the lost original A-minor version was the oboe, and he has recorded it in his own reconstruction of that putative original on a baroque oboe. His case against the violin is that: the range is "curiously limited" for that instrument, "avoiding the G string almost entirely," and that the supposed violin solo would at times be lower in pitch than the first violin part, something that is almost unheard of in dedicated violin concertos. By contrast, "the range is exactly the range of Bach's oboes"; scoring the solo oboe occasionally lower than the first violin was typical Baroque practice, as the oboe still comes through to the ear; and the "figurations are very similar to those found in many oboe works of the period." Even before its first complete performance, the Swiss music historian and publisher Hans Georg Nägeli described it as the “greatest musical masterpiece of all times and nations”. Many scholars believe that, along with the Art of Fugue and the Musical Offering, the work presents a summation of Bach’s musicianship as well as the most glorious presentation of the composer’s deeply held religious beliefs. Much of the Mass gave new form to vocal music that Bach had composed throughout his career, some of which was not from sacred sources (a point of contention for Leipzig churchgoers). The Kyrie and Gloria (known as the “Missa”) had been written as an application for the post of court composer at Dresden. The remaining movements, the Sanctus, Benedictus and Agnus Dei, turn the “Missa” into a “Missa tota”: the full setting of the Ordinary of the Mass. In the Kyrie, Bach explores three different forms of musical expression in an impassioned entreaty for God’s mercy. He brings in trumpets and drums to sing the praises of the Lord in the Gloria, Credo and Sanctus, and, as so often before, saves one of his most exquisite and poignant musical phrases to express the idea of peace in the ‘et in terra pax’. The dramatic contrast forged between the ‘Crucifixus’ and ‘Et resurrexit’ movements of the Credo serve as a dramatic representation of the Christian statement of belief, and the lamenting Agnus Dei aria gives way to a exultant chorus of ‘Dona nobis pacem’ (Grant us thy peace), bringing the vast score to its conclusion. René Jacobs directs the Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin in this reading, which was described as “Spacious and intimate … a compelling performance” by the BBC Music Magazine following its first release. The Reissue of one of the finest recordings of Bach’s “Hohe Messe’! This “compelling performance..spacious and intimate” (Gramophone) boasts of a line‐up of famous soloists: Christoph Prégardien, Matthias Goerne, Bernarda Fink and Hillevi Martinpelto, singers of world renown who have amply won their spurs in Early Music. René Jacobs and his Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin and the Rias Kammerchor count among the best (if not THE best..) of Baroque ensembles and choirs around the world. 00:00:00 Mass in B Minor BWV 232, Pt. 1: I.
