Ekaterina Gubanova (born 1979 in Moscow) is a Russian mezzo-soprano. She studied piano as a child, then choral conducting at the Moscow Conservatory, where she graduated with honours before taking up vocal studies there and at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki. Early prizes included the Grand Prix and audience award at the Marmande competition (2001) and second prize at the Mirjam Helin competition in Helsinki (2004). In 2002 she joined the Young Artists Programme of the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden. Her breakthrough came in 2005 when she sang Brangäne in Tristan und Isolde at the Paris Opera, a role that became one of her signatures and which she has since performed on many of the world's major stages. She made her Metropolitan Opera debut in 2007 in Prokofiev's War and Peace and has appeared at La Scala, the Vienna State Opera and the Bayreuth Festival, where she sang Venus in Tannhäuser (2019) and Kundry in Parsifal. Her repertoire centres on Wagner (Fricka, Brangäne, Kundry, Venus), Verdi (Amneris, Eboli and the Requiem, which she has sung under Riccardo Muti and Daniel Barenboim) and the French and Russian repertoire, as well as concert works such as Mahler's symphonies. She received the Casta Diva Award as Singer of the Year in 2020. Source: Rondo DB
