Anja Petersen (née Metzger) is a German soprano. She first studied violin and school music in Stuttgart before turning to singing, completing her concert diploma (Konzertexamen) with top marks; as a student she sang with the Neue Vocalsolisten Stuttgart. From 2002 to 2007 she was an ensemble member of the Oldenburgisches Staatstheater under her maiden name, singing lyric coloratura roles such as Gilda, Susanna, Adina, Olympia, Zerbinetta, Despina, Blonde and Oscar, as well as the title role in Violeta Dinescu's Eréndira, and received the Erna Schlüter Prize in 2005. After an engagement at Theater Augsburg (2007-2008) she turned freelance, working chiefly in concert and oratorio from Baroque to contemporary repertoire, with guest appearances at the Semperoper Dresden, Theater Bremen and the state operas of Stuttgart and Wiesbaden. She has been a member of the RIAS Kammerchor Berlin since 2010. In 2014 she stepped in at very short notice for the world premiere of Arnulf Herrmann's Drei Gesänge am offenen Fenster with the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, and in 2017 she created the female lead, Johanna, in Herrmann's opera Der Mieter at Oper Frankfurt; she also premiered his Tour de Trance with the BRSO in 2021.
