Johanni van Oostrum is a South African soprano, particularly admired in leading roles by Mozart, Wagner, Richard Strauss and Janáček. A graduate of the University of Pretoria, she studied voice with Mimi Coertse and was a member of Black Tie Opera. She won first prize at the Erna Spoorenberg Dutch Vocal Competition.

Her international breakthrough came in 2011, when she stepped in for Anne Schwanewilms as the Marschallin in Willy Decker's production of Der Rosenkavalier at De Nederlandse Opera in Amsterdam. This opened the doors of the German opera world, and she has since lived and worked mainly in Germany. Her repertoire includes the Marschallin, Elsa in Lohengrin, Sieglinde in Die Walküre, the title roles of Salome and Rusalka, and Ellen Orford in Peter Grimes; she created Elizabeth I in Brett Dean's Of One Blood at the Bavarian State Opera. She has appeared at the Bavarian State Opera, Dutch National Opera, Semperoper Dresden, Hamburg State Opera, Vienna State Opera and the Bolshoi Theatre, and in concert at the Concertgebouw Amsterdam, the Philharmonie de Paris and the Barbican Centre, working with conductors and directors such as Vladimir Jurowski, Oksana Lyniv, Claus Guth, Kirill Serebrennikov and Harry Kupfer.

In 2018 she received the Fleur du Cap Theatre Award for Best Performance by a Female in a Leading Role. She sang the First Lady in Yannick Nézet-Séguin's recording of Mozart's Die Zauberflöte for Deutsche Grammophon (2019). Source: Rondo DB
