Georg Nigl is an Austrian baritone, born in Vienna on 2 May 1972. As a boy he was a soprano soloist with the Wiener Sängerknaben (Vienna Boys Choir). He then studied voice at the Musikhochschule Wien with Margaretha Sparber and Rolf Sartorius, and Lied at the Konservatorium Wien with David Lutz. He later studied privately with Hilde Zadek.

Nigl is especially known for contemporary opera. He took part in world premieres of works by Friedrich Cerha, HK Gruber, Georg Friedrich Haas, Wolfgang Mitterer, Olga Neuwirth and Salvatore Sciarrino, and created the title role in Pascal Dusapin's Faustus, the Last Night at the Berlin State Opera. He is closely associated with Wolfgang Rihm's Jakob Lenz and has sung in Péter Eötvös's Die Tragödie des Teufels. His core repertoire also includes Monteverdi's Orfeo, Mozart's Papageno and Berg's Wozzeck, which he has sung at La Scala and the Bolshoi Theatre.

He is also an active Lied and concert singer, with pianists and keyboard players such as Alexander Melnikov, Andreas Staier, Olga Pashchenko and Alexander Gergelyfi. His recordings for Alpha Classics include Bach privat with Anna Lucia Richter (Diapason d'or, 2017), Jakob Lenz (2019), Vanitas (2020), Echo (2023) and Mozart's Clavichord (2025). He was named Singer of the Year in 2015 and received the German Record Critics' Award (2021) and the Austrian Music Theatre Award (2025).
