Jóhann Jóhannsson (Jóhann Gunnar Jóhannsson, 19 September 1969 – 9 February 2018) was an Icelandic composer and producer whose music blended classical orchestration with electronics and minimalism. Born in Reykjavík, he studied languages and literature at the University of Iceland and began his career in the Icelandic indie scene of the late 1980s and 1990s, playing in bands such as Daisy Hill Puppy Farm, Olympia, Unun and HAM. In 1999 he co-founded Kitchen Motors, an art collective, think tank and record label. His solo albums, including Englabörn (2002), Virðulegu forsetar (2004), Fordlandia (2008) and Orphée (2016, his debut on Deutsche Grammophon), were released on labels such as Touch, 4AD and Deutsche Grammophon. He became internationally known for his film scores, in particular his collaborations with Denis Villeneuve on Prisoners (2013), Sicario (2015) and Arrival (2016). His score for James Marsh's The Theory of Everything (2014) won the Golden Globe Award for Best Original Score and earned him an Academy Award nomination, followed by a second Oscar nomination for Sicario. He died in Berlin, where he had been living, in February 2018 at the age of 48. Source: Rondo DB
