Renato Ruotolo (1912-1973) was an Italian violinist and conductor born in Naples. He studied violin with Giovanni Càlveri and graduated from San Pietro a Majella Conservatory with Franco Tufari. In 1951, he studied orchestral conducting with Paul van Kempen at the Accademia Chigiana in Siena. He performed as second violinist in the Quartetto Napoletano and founded the Quartetto Ruotolo in Naples in the early 1940s. He served as concertmaster of the Orchestra dell'Accademia di Santa Cecilia and the Teatro San Carlo Orchestra. In the late 1950s, he founded and directed the Orchestra San Pietro a Majella in Naples, with which he recorded for Decca and maintained international activity until the late 1960s. He also conducted the Orchestra of the Gulbenkian Foundation in Lisbon, recording for Mercury. He was a professor of chamber music at the San Pietro a Majella Conservatory and performed on a 1756 Gagliano violin.
