Niels Nielsen Haslund (1 February 1747 - 14 May 1785) was a Danish-born violinist, merchant and music director, and the great-grandfather of the composer Edvard Grieg. Born in Aalborg, Denmark, he settled in Bergen, Norway, where he combined a career as a merchant with an active musical life as one of the leading violinists of the city. In 1770 he succeeded the organist Benjamin Ohle as director of Musikselskabet Harmonien, the music society founded in 1765 that later became the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra. Leading the orchestra from the violin as concertmaster-director, he held the post for fifteen years, until his death in 1785, the longest tenure of the society's early leaders, and was succeeded by Ole Pedersen Rødder. On 5 December 1775 he married Catharina Hedevig Kierumgaard in Bergen Cathedral. Their daughter Maren Regine Haslund married John Grieg, son of the Scottish-born Bergen merchant Alexander Greig; their son Alexander Grieg was the father of Edvard Grieg. Source: Rondo DB
