Arvīds Pārups (1890–1946) was a Latvian conductor, violinist and radio engineer, regarded as the first principal conductor of what is today the Latvian National Symphony Orchestra. Born in Auru Parish near Jelgava, he studied at the Riga Imperial Music School under Pāvuls Jurjāns and played in the Latvian Opera orchestra founded by Jurjāns in 1912. During and after the First World War he lived in Russia, working at the Saratov Conservatory and in the opera orchestra there (1918–1920), before returning to Latvia in 1921. In 1925 he joined Riga Radio as its first announcer, programme director and organiser, and from 1926 he led the radio symphony orchestra, remaining active as a conductor until 1940. A keen radio amateur with engineering expertise, he was also one of the initiators of the Dzintari Concert Hall and was awarded the Order of the Three Stars. Source: Rondo DB
