Urpo Rafael Pesonen (8 May 1915, Helsinki - 22 January 1994, Lahti) was a Finnish violinist, conductor and choir conductor. He studied in Germany, Austria and the United States, and gave his first concert as a violinist in 1940. During the Continuation War he led the regimental orchestra of the Uhtua sector. In 1944 he became conductor of the Oulu City Orchestra (now Oulu Sinfonia), which he led until 1959; from 1952 to 1959 he was also director of the Oulu Music Institute. In 1959 he was appointed music director of the City of Lahti and chief conductor of the Lahti City Orchestra (now Sinfonia Lahti), a post he held for nearly twenty years until 1978, making him one of the longest-serving chief conductors in the orchestra's history. He succeeded Martti Similä there and was followed by Jouko Saari. He also appeared as a guest conductor in Sweden and the Soviet Union. Source: Rondo DB
