Arne Harald Hammelboe (24 June 1916 - 25 April 2005) was a Danish conductor and teacher, born in Copenhagen. Having won a conducting competition as a boy and trained with leading musicians of his day, he became music director (kapelmester) of Det Ny Teater in Copenhagen in 1935, at only 19. After working as a restaurant musician, he conducted for the Danish State Radio (Statsradiofonien) from 1942 and was kapelmester at the Royal Danish Theatre in 1945-46, receiving Politiken's art prize in 1945. Following studies abroad, he became first conductor of the Odense city orchestra (today the Odense Symphony Orchestra) and Odense Theatre. He returned to the Royal Danish Theatre in 1954 as royal kapelmester, a post he held until 1973, and also composed and conducted music for Danish films such as Mød mig på Cassiopeia (1951). A highly valued teacher, he taught orchestral playing and conducting at the Royal Danish Academy of Music from 1957 to 1986, as professor from 1964, and at the Malmö Academy of Music from 1962 to 1979. He chaired the Danish Conductors' Association (Dansk Kapelmesterforening) from 1962 to 1997, succeeding its founder Emil Reesen, and guest-conducted widely in Denmark and abroad. A travel grant for conductors funded by his bequest is awarded annually by the association. Source: Rondo DB
