Robert Wagner (1915-2008) was an Austrian conductor, composer and music educator. Born in Vienna, he studied piano, composition and conducting at the Vienna Music Academy and musicology at the University of Vienna, earning his doctorate in 1938 with a study of Franz Schmidt, whose cantata Deutsche Auferstehung he completed in 1940. After his conducting debut in Vienna in 1936, he was Kapellmeister at the municipal theatres of Graz from 1938 to 1944. After the war he settled in Salzburg, where he became musical director of the opera at the Landestheater, artistic director of the Mozarteum Orchestra and head of the conducting class and opera school at the Mozarteum. From 1951 to 1961 he was Generalmusikdirektor in Münster, briefly also acting as interim theatre intendant in 1957, before becoming music director of the Tyrolean Symphony Orchestra in Innsbruck (1961-1965). He returned to Salzburg as professor and president of the Mozarteum (1965-1971), and in the early 1970s served as general music director of the Istanbul State Opera. He appeared as a guest conductor with the Vienna Philharmonic and in Ankara, Athens, Brussels, Sweden and Spain. His recordings, mostly with the Innsbruck Symphony Orchestra for labels such as Vox/Turnabout and Philips/Fontana, include Beethoven piano concertos with Felicja Blumental, violin concertos and Strauss waltzes. He also composed orchestral works, concertos, stage music and chamber music, and received the Golden Medal of Honour of the Mozarteum University in 1995. He died in Münster in 2008. Source: Rondo DB
