Nicholas Carter is an Australian conductor, born in 1985 in Melbourne. He sang in the National Boys Choir of Australia as a child and studied piano and voice at the University of Melbourne, while working with his mentor Richard Gill, first at OzOpera (where he conducted his first opera, Krása's Brundibár, in 2004) and then at the newly founded Victorian Opera.

He spent three seasons as assistant conductor to Vladimir Ashkenazy at the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, then moved to Europe: in 2011 Simone Young appointed him Kapellmeister and musical assistant at the Hamburg State Opera, and in 2014 he became Kapellmeister at the Deutsche Oper Berlin, working with Sir Donald Runnicles.

He was principal conductor of the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra from 2015 to 2019, chief conductor of the Stadttheater Klagenfurt and the Kärntner Symphonieorchester from 2018 to 2021, and chief conductor and co-opera director of Bühnen Bern from 2021 to 2025. In November 2024 he was announced as general music director of the Staatsoper Stuttgart from the 2026-27 season. Source: Rondo DB
