Nicolai Schifferblatt (Nikolai Shiferblat) was a Russian violinist and conductor, born in Vilna (now Vilnius) in 1886 or 1887, who died at his home in Tokyo on 14 October 1936 after an asthma attack. He graduated from the music school in Tiflis in 1906, studied violin with Henri Petri in Dresden and with Leopold Auer at the St Petersburg Conservatory, and was concertmaster of the Narodny Dom orchestra in St Petersburg and soloist and concertmaster of the Moscow Symphony Orchestra. In 1925 he came to Japan as leading concertmaster of the Russian side in the Japanese-Russian joint symphony concerts in Tokyo, alongside musicians from Harbin. In July 1929 he succeeded Josef König as conductor of the New Symphony Orchestra, the forerunner of the NHK Symphony Orchestra, and held the post until July 1936, playing a central part in the early development of professional orchestral music in Japan. A memorial concert conducted by Joseph Rosenstock was held in March 1937. Source: Rondo DB
