Edwin Lindner (1884-1935) was a German conductor and orchestra manager, chief conductor of what became the Dresdner Philharmonie from 1915 to 1923. In 1915, with the orchestra in financial difficulty after many of its musicians had been called up for military service in the First World War, Lindner acquired the Dresden Gewerbehaus orchestra and refounded it as the Dresdner Philharmonisches Orchester, a successor company that stabilised the ensemble. He engaged 64 musicians and enlarged the orchestra to some 80 players, allowing it to take on large-scale works by Reger, Strauss, Mahler, Berlioz and Bruckner and marking a clear rise in its artistic standard. Concert records show him leading the orchestra's Philharmonic concerts in Dresden in the early 1920s. Toward the end of his tenure the orchestra adopted its present name, Dresdner Philharmonie. He was succeeded by Joseph Gustav Mraczek in 1923. Source: Rondo DB
