Walter Wilhelm Gieseking (1895-1956) was a German pianist born in Lyon, France, to German parents. He began formal study at the Hannover Municipal Conservatory in 1911 under Karl Leimer. After World War I service, he gained international recognition through extensive European and American tours from the 1920s onwards. Gieseking was renowned for his interpretations of Classical, Romantic, and early 20th-century composers, particularly excelling in the works of Debussy, Ravel, Mozart, and Beethoven. He was celebrated for his subtle touch, sophisticated pedaling, and exceptional dynamic control. His comprehensive discography includes complete recordings of Mozart and Ravel piano works, and virtually all solo piano works of Debussy. During World War II, he remained in Germany and faced postwar controversy over alleged Nazi collaboration, though he was cleared by U.S. military authorities in 1947. He resumed his international career and continued performing until his death in London in 1956 from complications following pancreatitis surgery. Source: Rondo DB
