The Wiener Staatsopernchor (Vienna State Opera Chorus) is the chorus of the Vienna State Opera, made up exclusively of professional singers. Its non-operatic branch, the Konzertvereinigung Wiener Staatsopernchor, was founded in 1927 by chorus member Viktor Maiwald to perform outside the opera house, in the manner of the Vienna Philharmonic. After the Second World War the chorus set benchmark standards for international choral singing, and established its reputation above all through recordings. In 1956, when Herbert von Karajan introduced performances in original languages at the Vienna State Opera, the chorus made the transition smoothly. Rondo DB
