Capella Savaria is a Hungarian period-instrument chamber orchestra based in Szombathely, in Western Hungary near the Austrian border. The group takes its name from Savaria, the Roman name of Szombathely, which was founded as a Roman outpost in 45 CE. Founded in 1981 by Pál Németh, since 1999 the Capella Savaria has been led by violinist Zsolt Kalló. Although best known as a period-instrument group dedicated mainly to music of the eighteenth century, Capella Savaria has played contemporary music, as well. It has made more than 60 recordings, including several with conductor Nicholas McGegan. These have been released mainly on Hungaraton, but Capella Savaria's recordings have also appeared on the Quintana, Dorian, Centaur, Harmonia Mundi, Dynamic, and Naxos labels. Allmusic
